's not going to be because of big bird? >> first of all, as governor romney pointed out last night, the mayo clinic is a private institution run by people privately who do things efficiently, which is very different than the federal government, which has rampant waste. i helped co-author a book called "stop paying the crooks" a few years ago which pointed out in new york state medicaid, 10% of the money goes to pay for fraud. >> we're talking about medicaid, not medicare. >> medicare's the same problem. >> i'm jumping in. unlike jim last night, i mean it when i jump in. >> i'm very proud of you. we're proud of you. >> you will be unsurprised to hear you have been speaking more, newt. not by a lot. when we come back, jennifer will get her lion's share of the time to respond to it and we will have more red meat to toss on the barbecue, including the future life or death of big bird. a speed bump! for all of our kids. >> mitt romney last night's debate talking about education as governor of massachusetts. duval patrick followed romney as governor. he's co-chairman of the obama campaign and one of the president's staunchest defenders. what did he make of president obama's debate performance? he joins me now. governor, the general consensus seems to be your man took one hell of a shellacking. >> i think the president had a good debate but i think romney had a better one, to tell you the truth, especially on style points. we know governor romney from our time here in massachusetts, his time here in massachusetts. we know him to be a very effective salesman and he was selling. the problem is what he was selling won't actually do what he says it will do. it will not grow opportunity from the middle out. >> tell me this, though. i remember when we spoke at the dnc convention, you said, you made a big speech, we talked about it afterwards, time for the party to show some backbone. by party, obviously including the president. last night he didn't seem to have any backbone wha

in this -- on this spotlight before, so you know, governor romney is probably a little bit the underdog but i think he's going to be ready. he's going to be ready on the issues which is really what this election's about. >> there's a massive game at the moment of both sides downplaying expectation. so far, even if mitt romney just makes the stage, you guys could declare a triumph and a glorious victory. it's getting a bit ridiculous. the truth is mitt romney spent most of the first half of this year debating, so he should have the advantage, shouldn't he? >> well, i expect him to do well. i don't think -- what an election's about, what this one's about, piers, we can't go on like this with unemployment this high and the government functionally bankrupt and chaos abroad. i think the debate's going to be about that. i think if they stay on the substance, i'm hopeful that governor romney should do very well, even if he fumbles a little bit because he hasn't been in this kind of a format before, because you know, i think the country knows we need change and i think if he stays on that message, he should do fine.

over the last week that the race is starting to get away from governor romney that i think is not really founded in necessarily good data. you know, out of five polls that will come out in the week, there's always one poll that will show some margin where it shows obama winning a state like virginia or ohio or florida by a margin that's greater than he won it in 2008. i think governor romney's a stronger candidate. i think the fundamentals are better for republicans. i have a very hard time believing some of these polls that are showing, you know, obama up by ten points in a place like ohio, and especially virginia. i do expect to be in the republican column come november. >> charles blow, one of the reasons people are believing this momentum is that every poll now appears to be widening. that may be an exaggeration. i'm sure we can find one or two which remain the same, but it seems that ever since the convention, we have seen obama's fortunes get better and mitt romney's get worse. and you've got to say as the tension builds to the first debate, this is make or break week
